# Choose a meaningful passing rule

Not every training should require 80 points. Decide whether you are verifying completion, a correct decision, or a performance threshold.

## Before you begin

Configure rules while reviewing a new stage or in an existing stage’s inspector. Options are supplied by the selected content’s capabilities.

**Worked example**

Complaint clarification tests a compliant response: use Specific endings. If the content also supplies a 0–100 score and quality matters, require that outcome AND at least 80 points. The threshold only makes sense within that content’s scoring range.

These are reference screens or sample data. Interactions here do not create journeys, send mail, publish content or record real results. Use the product pages for live work.

   ## Choose the assessment purpose before the rule

   1. Use Any ending to require a complete practice run. Use Specific endings for correct handling and select acceptable results; any one selected result is acceptable. Use Explore different endings when comparing multiple outcomes is itself the objective.

**Why this matters**Any ending can include a failure ending. Specific endings and exploring distinct endings serve different objectives.

**Check the result**The rule describes what the learner must accomplish, not just a number.

   Not the expected result?

If the desired outcome is absent, check the bound content and version. Do not copy an outcome name from another simulation.

   ## Interpret thresholds in the context of the content

   1. Use Score threshold for overall performance and enter a value within the content’s permitted range. For PDF or video use a progress threshold, such as 90%. A distinct-ending count cannot exceed the number of outcomes provided.

**Why this matters**Reaching 90% verifies progress, not comprehension. Scores from different content are not automatically comparable.

**Check the result**The threshold is valid and has a clear teaching rationale.

   Not the expected result?

A missing option means that capability is not exposed by this content. Change the content or assessment approach rather than looking for hidden variables.

   ## Combine requirements when both result and quality matter

   1. Choose Composite and add a specific ending and an 80-point threshold under All required conditions. Leave alternatives empty when only those two are required. If alternatives are populated, at least one alternative is also required; the two groups are not alternatives to each other.

**Why this matters**All required conditions and at least one alternative, when present, must hold in the same attempt. Only the distinct-ending rule accumulates distinct outcomes across attempts.

**Check the result**Check the example: correct ending + 85 passes; wrong ending + 95 and correct ending + 70 do not. Reopen the saved rule to verify it.

   Not the expected result?

A composite cannot be empty. A high score in one attempt and the correct ending in another do not satisfy a same-attempt requirement.

## Choose an action for your objective

| Your objective | Choose / do this | Important effect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Practice the complete process | Any ending | Failure endings also count; unsuitable for a correct-answer-only assessment. |
| Make a required decision correctly | Specific endings | Choose acceptable results; reaching any selected result is sufficient. |
| Compare different consequences | Explore different endings | Counts distinct outcomes, not repeated visits to the same ending. |
| Meet an overall performance standard | Score threshold | Check the scoring range; not all content has a maximum of 100. |
| Complete a document or video | Progress threshold | Measures progress, not understanding or correct decisions. |
| Require both outcome and quality | Composite → All required | Require the chosen outcome and score in the same attempt. |

## What completion looks like

You can state the passing rule in one sentence and test it with both a passing and a failing example.
